RESIDENTIAL

Sunset Capri Residence West Hollywood, CA

SCOPE

Restoration, Interior Design

COMPLETED IN

2023

The Sunset Capri building, originally designed by architect Edward H. Fickett in 1952, is an unexpected architectural gem set just above the Sunset Strip. Within this iconic crescent-shaped complex, we restored one of the units, transforming it into a modern homage to the building’s mid-century roots.

Taken down to the studs, the residence became a blank canvas for reimagining a space reflective of the era. Warm cedar paneling now lines the walls, while ungauged black field slate flooring adds a rugged, grounding texture throughout. These tactile elements set the stage for a curated art collection, bespoke furnishings, and sculptural lighting. The result is a carefully preserved time capsule — one that pays tribute to an iconic chapter in Los Angeles design history.

DETAILS + MATERIALS
An Alberto Giacometti sculpture crowns a floating white oak cabinet. Beneath it, a mirrored base plate subtly reflects the slate floors, enhancing the illusion of lightness and drawing attention to the cabinet’s suspended form.

Throughout the residence, the white oak cabinetry is characterized by clean lines, and raised-frame detailing, all finished with hand-sourced vintage hardware.

ART + FURNISHINGS

The home is fitted with a curated collection of built-in furnishings and personal art, including family heirlooms and standout works — such as a Régis De Bouvier De Cachard painting of Piazza San Marco above the living room sofa, and an original Alberto Giacometti sketch integrated into the gallery wall. In the living room, a sculptural vintage Paul Evans coffee table sits atop a hand-tufted dragon rug, anchoring the space.

LIGHTING + VIEWS
To highlight the view of Sunset Tower Hotel and the Sunset Strip, we installed a mirror above the breakfast banquette, which amplifies the natural light. The Brutalist-inspired chandelier above the table is paired with matching sconces across the room.

ARCHITECTURAL DOOR FRAMES

Elongated, true-to-era door frames extend to the ceiling, creating seamless transitions between living spaces — a nod to iconic mid-century landmarks such as Sunnylands.

THE SUNSET CAPRI BUILDING

This crescent-shaped structure, designed by architect Edward H. Fickett in 1952, stands as an icon of Los Angeles’ mid-century modernism, capturing the attention of legendary architectural photographer Julius Shulman, who immortalized it in a 1954 series.
